Remembering fun times with our beloved pets…
Many years ago we had a dog named Wally. We took him on many trips to California. We have found when traveling with a large pet as energetic as Wally, it pays to have some type of barrier in your vehicle between you and your pet; that way everyone can have a good day. Wally was a very independent and energetic German Shorthair/Black Lab mix. Wally’s favorite thing was to chase the seagulls while running along the ocean shore. Because he was so energetic and independent, he could get away from us easily. Actually, while home he ventured to our neighbor’s house quite a ways up the road. Luckily, we had put our phone number on his collar. The neighbor lady called to ask if Wally could spend the night (He was very lovable!), and she would return him in the morning. We let him stay, and YES, he was returned safely.
Our next pet was Baxter. He was an adorable Yellow Lab/Retriever Mix, and talk about loyal! When I wondered where he was, I just had to look back to my right, and there was Baxter. He was gentle and very friendly. He’d even smile when he greeted those who approached him; some watchdog!! We knew he was going to be a sweet dog when we picked him up in California as a puppy. On our travel home to Idaho, he just laid there in the back seat not making a sound; just happy to be with us…his new human companions.
Our last pet was a cat named Tony. When he was 15 years old, we decided to take him with us in our RV. We were excited for the first trip. We put him in a pet carrier and off we went. He proceeded to meow steadily until we drove past our vet’s office, and then he was suddenly silent. What pets know! Have you ever tried to walk your cat with a leash? Well, needless to say, I wish we had a pet stroller so that both pet and human could have enjoyed our walks.
Earlier in the blog we had asked if we should get a dog or cat for our next pet. Now while looking out the window of our RV and seeing the rain, I vote cat. When the sun shines and I want to walk with a faithful companion, I vote dog. Looks like we are still in a quandary… Both my wife and I hope you are having a great relationship with a pet.
