There is multitude of fun-filled opportunities to  enjoy your off-highway vehicles (OHV) while visiting Utah.  There is a map available online that highlights the premier areas to ride.  There are 38 in the state to choose from.  Only properly registered OHVs are allowed on designated public lands and roads. (You may ride on private land, but you must have the owner’s permission.)  To find the map and details for properly registering your OHV, go to the Utah State Parks website.  There you will find everything you need to know when considering riding your OHV, including rules and laws, what you need to know before you go, safety tips; even hunting.

The Utah State Parks OHV Program asks that you be responsible.  This includes registering your machine properly, learning and obeying the OHV safety laws and rules.  They also ask that you share…share the trails with other OHV users and other groups, such as, mountain bikers, skiers, snowshoers, and equestrians.

Whether your OHV of choice is an ATV, motorcycle, or snowmobile, Utah offers many opportunities for enjoyment. Use your ramp to load your OHV and head to Utah for a memorable time  filled with wonderful outdoor fun and adventure.

Our travels have taken us to another beautiful part of the country: southwestern Utah. Once again we are in the midst of breathtaking red rock country. We are just outside of St. George, a short distance from Zion National Park. What a treasure that park is!  In Zion, Utah’s first national park, you can walk paths that were once traveled by native peoples of ancient times and pioneers. This park is in a canyon where the Virgin River flows. Once here you can gaze up the massive Navajo sandstone cliffs that are thousands of feet high. Their cream, pink and red color make a majestic contrast against the bright blue sky.  Here you will also see a multitude of plants and animals unique to this area.

You can view the breathtaking beauty of this park by car by accessing the 7 mile Zion Canyon Scenic Drive, or you can view it in a much more intimate way by hiking some of its many trails. This park offers endless hiking opportunities for all ages and experiences during all months of the year. The park has a convenient shuttle system that stops at many of the trailheads. Those with disabilities may also experience some of the trails. Transport your wheelchair into the park and enjoy trails at the lower levels that are wheelchair accessible.

For specific information regarding Zion’s most popular trails, check out www.utah.com.   I hope you take the opportunity to visit and enjoy Zion National Park, one of America’s treasures.

If you are an ATV enthusiast wanting to find ATV trails in the Cottonwood and Sedona, Arizona area , I have discovered numerous off-highway drives for you to enjoy. The shortest trail is 2.5 miles long and the longest is 40 miles long.  There are 30 trails all together to choose from; one just right for you to enjoy your outdoor adventure in the breathtaking landscape of this area.  I would like to highlight one of the trails below.

The 10.5 mile Boynton Pass Trail leaves from Sedona and travels over Boynton Pass with its spectacular red rock country vistas.  Initially, the road is paved near residential areas and a resort. Then it becomes a wide dirt trail which allows for vehicles to pass one another.  Under normal weather conditions, mud is not a factor, but you may be driving over grades, rocks, ruts or water crossings making this trail difficult for the normal passenger vehicle.  It passes several hiking trailheads that lead to wilderness to the north.

There are several vortexes on this trail: the Boynton Canyon Vortex and the Blue Door Vortex.  The Boynton Canyon Trailhead  leads to the Boynton Canyon Vortex.  Sedona is known for its vortexes; believed to be areas where the earth’s energy overflows at a specific point.  The energy is unique to each vortex.  Many people think that these vortexes have spiritual qualities. They often meditate and pray here, and even experience healing.  This vortex is believed to be a masculine-feminine vortex that enhances the psychic senses as well as memories of your past life.  The energy is said to be strongest around the knoll.  On this trail you will have access to the Palatki and Honanki Ruins, uncommon painted pictographs.  Nearby, you may also visit fragile cliff dwellings.

For more information on this trail and the other 23 trails in this area, go to www.trails.com where you can read about the trails, view the complete trail guide and topo map.  So grab your ATV ramp, load your ATV and head out for a most enjoyable experience in this most beautiful part of the country.

Amazingly, one can be in the hot, dry desert climate of the Palm Springs area, drive about 50 miles up the mountain on Highway 74 and reach cool, fresh mountain air and tall pines and sweet smelling cedars.  Nestled there, you will discover the wonderful little town of Idyllwild with its “small town” ease and peace and quiet…a great escape from the hustle and bustle found in the big cities down below.   Idyllwild is quaint with its locally owned small shops and restaurants.  It has remained rustic.   Just what you’d hope to find when driving up into the mountains.

Idyllwild, with all it’s natural beauty, is a wonderful base for hiking and backpacking.   You can go for a quick weekend day hike or for longer, high country, overnight hiking experiences .  No fees are necessary for day or overnight hikes.  Permits are needed for most trails.  There are nine trails ranging from easy to strenuous, so there is something for everyone.  Dogs are permitted on some trails.  Check with the US Forest Service in Idyllwild (909) 382-2921 or Mt.  San Jacinto State Park in Idyllwild (951-659-2607 for all the details

If you enjoy mountain biking, just load your bike on your vehicle’s bike carrier and head on up to Idyllwild.  Approximately 200 miles of dirt roads and more than 40 miles of trails await you in the San Jacinto Mountains around Idyllwild.  You will have challenging routes with breathtaking scenery. Depending on where you park, you may need an Adventure or Recreation Pass.  It costs just $5 for a day pass and $30 for a yearly pass.  It can be picked up at the Idyllwild Ranger Station .  If you have any questions, just call the Ranger Station at  (909)382-2922.

Happy hiking and biking!!

I love strolling on the sidewalks of Palm Canyon Dr. in historic downtown Palm Springs.  It’s like the perfect place to be on a warm winter’s day.  Nothing is rushed here.  Everyone is taking their time enjoying the beautiful palm trees that line the street, dining indoors or outdoors ( I prefer outdoors!) at one of the many kinds of restaurants, or just walking in and out of the many specialty shops.

This pet friendly city is a great place to take your adored pet, either on a leash or in a pet stroller. While on your walk, you will want to visit  the specialty shop called Cold Nose, Warm Heart that I know your pet will just love!!  When it’s eating time, you may want to go to Jake’s.   Not only is the food delicious, but I know that they allow pets.  When I ate there, I saw a gentleman with his dog walk right in and have a seat at a table.  Pretty neat to be able to dine with your furry, faithful companion by your side.

On Palm Canyon Dr. between Tahquitz and Ramon, you will find the Walk of Stars.  It honors the many celebrities that have visited here. Come see if your favorite star is among the honorees.  If you’d like, you can watch a celebrity receive his/her star.  Just go to www.palmsprings.com/stars/ or call 760-322-1563 to find a list of upcoming celebrity star dedications.

I hope you and your faithful companion enjoy beautiful downtown Palm Springs!  If you want other activites to do with your precious dog, just go to www.dogfriendly.com to find many more activities to do in Palm Springs, as well as other parts of this country and the world.
